HMB LOVESTORY: JAKE ⚔ IRINA
Dear readers! We love our medieval sport for its brutality, harsh beauty and uncompromising, like you. However, as an exception, we believe that the February famous holiday is an excellent occasion for a special series of articles #HMBlovestory. In these issues, we will share the best things in the whole wide world - stories of a love of women and men to each other and of course, to the historical medieval battles, whereby they met. After all, as you have long known, representatives of any gender have the opportunity to feel like a real knight in today's world. Today on the air there is a couple, that on the first sight comes out in the leaders in the number of contrasts: growth, the presence of a gorgeous beard, club membership, gender, well, in the end, it is a real international union! However, with all the obvious differences, these two have much more in common than at the first glance, it is only get to know them better.
He: Jake Coles, fighter
She: Irina Bolshakova, fighter
Country: United Kingdom/Russia
In a relationship: since 2017
– How did you first meet?
Jake: The first word I said to Ira was "Sorry!!!!" after I accidentally punched her in the face with a punch shield in a mixed friendly buhurt somewhere in February 2017 in London. Ira was a member of another department of our club, and I came to our joint training.
Irina: «Punched her in the face»… hah! Sent me flying, to be precise! :D
– And it was love at first sight!
Irina: Rather, with the first punch! :D
Jake: After this it would be very strange if we wouldn't start to meet :) It didn't take long after that.
– She flied and thought: «He is so stroooooooooong!!!!»
Irina: Hahaha, that’s exactly what I thought!
– Are you in different clubs now?
Jake: Yes, for now. Ira is a candidate of «Bayard», and I’m a captain of «Armored Combat Gloucester».
– Ira, are you going to change a club after your moving out?
Irina: A good question actually. There’s no a UK Bayard branch yet, but maybe it’s a start? ;)
– Do you live together now? Who changed country?
Irina: I took a master's course in the UK when we met. So when my student visa was ended, I had to go back to Moscow, where I was from originally. But now visa formalities are settled, everything is finally sorted, and I am reunited with my knight, having moved to him.
– How does overall fond of HMB affect family life? Is your dwelling filled up with weaponry, diplomas, medals etc.? Or there is some kind of Wall of Honor or something like that?:)
Jake: Mostly HMB spills out into domestic life when we grab our home soft swords and brutally fight at any disagreements, trashing the room with wrestling!
– But it's unfair! You're stronger!!!
Jake: She’s quicker and she bites!!!
Irina: That was supposed to be a secret! :D And also I’ve learnt a new trick called «And now my foot goes into you jaw», so it wouldn't be easy to defeat me :D
Jake: I’m discouraging her from attending training too often, or I’ll begin to lose every time! :D
– Hha! Russian girls:) So... does common fond of HMB add unanimity in your private life or Vice versa, become a subject for debate, who is cooler and all that?
Jake: All at once. On the one hand it unites, and on the other – provokes disputes, and we do not always come to an agreement. But I think it's kind of cool, because it gives us the opportunity to look at things from different points.
– Yes-yes, I remember: «...and brutally fight at any disagreements...» :D
Jake: That's right. «Don’t agree? Duel me!»
– How did you cope with each other's fans? Especially the opposite sex =)
Jake: Well, I trust Ira completely. And of course, she is certainly strong enough to take care of herself, so I have no issues here.
Irina: And what about myself... As Jake said, I'm strong – it's just in case, that all the girls, who looks at him too closely, were aware :D Well, seriously, we are absolutely similar here – no relationship will last long without trust, especially at a long distance.
– And how does the behavior of your half in everyday life differ from the behavior on the list and training for example?
Jake: The similarity also appears here - usually we are quite relaxed and chilled out, but while an intense trainings or especially at the tournament we may behave quite sharply snap or explode due to any trifle. But, understanding the reason for this behavior, we still help each other.
Irina: In fairness, it happens also in everyday life, for example, when both of us are very tired... But it works exactly the same way here, so no one is offended.
– What do you do during your partner's fights? Do you help him as a support, cheer from the stands or is this spectacle unbearable for you for a number of understandable reasons?
Jake: We both always support each other mutually. Help with water, weapons, helmets etc. or repairing armor. We're a team!
Irina: Yeah, a Team with a capital «T»!!!
– And what about emotions?
Jake: I try not to watch ... Sometimes her fights are quite tense for me. But I am sure that no one will take care of Ira better than herself, so I do my best to be objective and not emotional.
Irina: I’m quite a silent fan really; but when I see someone coming from behind and Jake doesn’t see it - oh, you’d better stay away from me if you don’t want to become deaf!
– Let's step away from the HMB and talk about the two of you. What traits of your companion do you value most of all?
Jake: For me it is primarily her dedication. She is incredibly touchingly caring for and supporting me, whether in sports or everyday life. And Ira gives good advice, always helps in everything. I am very lucky!
Irina: It's really hard to choose one! He is very caring, but the confidence and feeling that everything is alright and nothing is impossible, when we are together with him, is even cooler! For example, I may have the worst day ever, but with Jake, it really doesn't matter anymore. «Go be strong on the lists and I’ll take care of you after» - is the best I've ever heard! :)
When you have someone to shelter under his wing, hide there or just to pour your heart out, it fills every day of your life with such a confidence, that all the hardships and problems fade into the background or even further! And at the end of our interview we have a great pleasure to congratulate Jake with his Birthday! On this day we want to wish him rapid development in the HMB-direction and, of course, less injuries, because the most important thing he already has - a real Russian beauty and faithful combat friend who is ready to follow him even at the end of the World: whether Siberia or the shores of Foggy Albion. And if we'll rephrase Avi ("Snatch") a little: «England! Where fish, chips, cup ‘o tea, bad weather, the Sword in the f*cking Stone, HMB… Jake and Ira!»
