HMB LOVESTORY: KENO ⚔ DENISE

Dear readers! We love our medieval sport for its brutality, harsh beauty and uncompromising, like you. However, as an exception, we believe that the February famous holiday is an excellent occasion for a special series of articles #HMBlovestory. In these issues, we will share the best things in the whole wide world - stories of a love of women and men to each other and of course, to the historical medieval battles, whereby they met. After all, as you have long known, representatives of any gender have the opportunity to feel like a real knight in today's world.

Almost at the end of the wave of publications in this column, we decided to pay attention to Western Europe again. After all, this is the very interesting thing – to find the most gentle, the most human qualities in people who are equally easily able to handle the hissing German letter constructions, umlauts, as well as weights and heavy swords. Bremen fighters on our air, caught in between tours.

Husband: Keno Töpfer, fighter

Wife: Denise Töpfer, fighter

Country: Germany

Married: Since 2017

— How and when did you find each other?

Denise: It happened more than 8 years ago. We both played the same online game back then, and that's where we met. We lived in different cities at that moment, but one day we wanted to meet each other. And so... we started dating :)

— What game? Lineage? World of Warcraft?

Denise: WoW!

Keno: By the way, it was pretty nerdy back then.

— How is that: be together in a distance? Who moved in to whom finally?

Keno: Denise lived in Berlin and I lived in Bremen. We visited each other every second weekend, in total, a couple of times a month. And so during a year and a half! It was quite hard, at least for us.

— So where do you two live now? In Berlin or in Bremen?

Denise: In Bremen :D

— Well, according to our interviews and international practice – the girls are far more easy-going!

Denise: That’s right! I just had a really good job opportunities in both cities, so I chose Bremen :)

— Who came after another in HMB or you did it independently from each other? Or maybe together?

Keno: We've always been interested in medieval fairs and all that... And one day me and some Denise's friends has decided to give to her a sword for her birthday! That was the beginning. I remember when we thought, if you have a sword, you should use it. At first it was early medieval battles, but after a while we wanted more, tried our hand at HMB and so we stayed there.

— How did overall fond of HMB affect family life? Where do you store all of your Armory?

Denise: We even bought a bigger flat to have a place to keep armor and swords! At least the whole room is reserved for our armor, staff, weapons and, of course, for all the things with which we returned from the tournament :D

Keno: This room is in a constant mess! Mostly because I don't put the armor back in place... and yes, of course, it has a big impact on family life. Training takes a lot of time every day. But hey! - we like to do this, don't we? So there is no a big problem here :)

— Does HMB as a common hobby more often unite you or Vice versa - become a subject for debate, who is cooler and all that? :)

Denise: Oh, we realy debate a lot! Basically about the evolution of sports in Germany or how to improve our training, or about the training itself. Our opinions are mostly similar, so discussions just take quite a while, but we love it! :D

— Do you have a competitive moment in the relationship with each other?

Denise: Never! We started with trainings and fights with each other – it still occurs. Of course, we do not often meet on the lists during tournaments, but on training we continue to fight against each other. Keno is a huge inspiration for me, as a dedicated fighter and as a captain.

Keno: My wife helps me to notice even the smallest defects and correct them, becoming better, whether it is a duel or buhurt – it does not matter! :D I would say so: there should be a strong woman next to every strong man!

— And how do you cope with each other's fans?

Denise: I don't know if I have fans :D Well, excepting little kids maybe!

Keno: The same for me - I don't think I have fans! :D

— Does the behavior of your half in everyday life differ from the behavior on the lists and training?

Denise: Hm... good question. I'm sure, we are more vivacious and mobile on the lists then in normal life. We become more eager and sometimes hot-headed a little!

Keno: But I would say that Denise does not change much. She always inspires me to do my maximum, both on the lists and in everyday life. Well, maybe in normal life she is more calm than on the lists, but this is due to the action of adrenaline! :D

— Do fights turn you on? Which partner do you like more: the one on the lists, or the one in everyday life?

Denise: It drives me totally! But I like the calm Keno in my normal life more ;)

Keno: Denise is my partner both on the lists and as my wife. But of course I like to lie on the couch with her or walk the dog together. Well, we shouldn't spend all the time on training or in fights! :)

— What do you do during your partner's fights? Do you support him, cheer from the stands or go way from the lists?

Keno: If possible, I am 100% of the time near her lists, supporting, giving advice and hopefully helping her to win. Even if you are a fighter of such a high class as she is, some little things can still slip away! Therefore, we support each other almost all the time.

Denise: The same goes for me when Keno's on the lists!

— Are you worried much about each other during the fight?

Keno: In duels we do not yell often, but after big tournaments with buhurts both of us often lost our voice :D

Denise: After Dynamo Cup I have lost my voice again, although I watched it live from home! :D

— What traits of your companion do you value most of all?

Denise: Honesty and loyalty - no matter what happens. Keno's always there for me.

Keno: Denise is always honest and direct and would never lie to me in any case. My loving, caring wife! :)

And do not you dare to say after it that online games are harmful, they just kill time and bla-bla-bla! If it wasn't for WoW there will be no such a stunning bright pair in the world of HMB, who will help each other out in the game, will cover backs of each other on the lists, and then will run for a bread in the store and will cook a delicious dinner! Such a beauty, isn't it?!
